Clarence Arvid Johnson

Clarence Arvid Johnson, formerly of Thomaston, CT., Kensington, CT., and Boca Raton, FL., died on October 22, 2004 at the Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford, CT. He was born on October 19, 1913 in New Haven, CT., and was the eldest son of Clara Rasch Johnson and Samuel Arvid Johnson. Throughout his life, Clarence acted with kindness, generosity and a huge sense of humor. He believed that with enough hard work and a positive attitude, one could accomplish anything..and he did accomplish a great deal. He began his career as a ten year old water boy for Berlin Steel and completed his career 57 years later as Chairman of the Board for the same company. He gave generously of time and money to family, friends, and worthy causes. He was dedicated to his family and took leadership roles in his community, church, and fraternal organizations. He was an awesome example of how to live life to the hilt. The lord broke the mold when he made Clarence, and he will be missed. He is survived by his beloved companion of 10 years, Adell Kenyon of East Hartford, CT. He leaves a daughter Virginia and husband William Perruccio of Portland, CT. A son Carl Arvid and wife Sally Johnson of Kensington, CT., also granddaughters: Susan Perruccio King and husband David of Torrington, CT.; Samantha Johnson of Housatonic, Mass. and Katherine Hayden of Berlin, CT. Grandsons: Stephen Johnson and his wife Vicki of North Conway, NH.; Brian Perruccio and his wife Jennifer of Apex, NC.; Alexander Johnson of Monterey, MA.; Ashley Johnson of Great Barrington, MA.; and Curtiss Hayden of Berlin, CT. He also leaves four great grandchildren: Alexa and Anna King of Torrington, Davis and Kate Perruccio of Apex, NC. He leaves sisters: Dixie and husband Arnold Toby of Port St. Lucie, FL.; Muriel and husband, Paul Petrich of Riverside, CA. Also sisters-in-law: Elisabeth Johnson of Brunswick, ME., and Eldah Johnson of Harwington, CT., also many nieces and nephews throughout the United States. He was predeceased by brothers Samuel and Ralph Johnson and his wife Elsie Radke Johnson. Clarence was an active member of Sphinx Shrine in Newington, where he was Potentate in 1980. He was Master Mason in St. Pauls Lodge #11 in Thomaston, CT. for over 60 years. He was a member of the Scottish Rite where he was awarded the 33rd degree. Was also a member of the Jesters Court #192. He was a member of New Haven Commandry #2 since 1937. He was employed by Berlin Steel Construction Company for his entire working life of 57 years. He became President in 1970, and Chairman in 1979 after serving as.. Waterboy, Ironworker, Foreman, Superintendent and Executive Vice President. He served on the Police Commission in Berlin for 8 years. He was a Director of the Berlin Savings Bank for many years. He was an active member of the Berlin Lions Club. He served on the First Lutheran Church of New Britain Finance Committee. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in East Hartford and a former member of First Lutheran in Waterbury, CT. and First Lutheran in New Britain, and Advent Lutheran in Boca Raton, FL. He was a member of Shuttle Meadow Country Club in Kensington, CT. for many years where he loved to play golf and where he attained the highest honor, that of Gaining membership on Mssr. Catalanos First Team. He was also a member of Tamoshanter Country Club in FL. Donations may be made in his honor to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 51 Blossom Street, Boston, Mass. 02114. Funeral services will be held Tuesday October 26, 2004 10 AM at Faith Lutheran Church, 1120 Silver Lane, East Hartford, CT. Followed by burial in Rose Hill Memorial Park. Calling hours will be held Monday evening 3 to 5 and 7to 9 PM at Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Square, New Britain.
