Dr. Ferdinand Sauer

Dr. Ferdinand Sauer, 57, of New Britain, husband of Kathleen McKeown Sauer, died unexpectedly Saturday June 28, 2003. Born in Bronx, NY, son of Gaetana ''Gay'' Cataldo Sauer of Beth Page, L.I., N.Y. and the late Ferdinand F. Sauer, he was a resident of New Britain since 1974. He received his B.S. from the University of Pittsburgh, graduating as Outstanding Scholar-athlete in 1966, and received his M.D. degree from the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center in 1970. After serving with the U.S. Navy, Dr. Sauer served his residency at the University of Connecticut/New Britain General Hospital from 1975 to 1977. He was Chief Resident in 1978. He joined the Grove Hill Medical Center in 1978. In 1992, he was named Associate Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at New Britain General Hospital. He was appointed Assistant Chief of Staff at New Britain General in 1997, and was appointed a Clinical Professor at the School of Medicine of the University of Connecticut Health Center in 1997. Over the years, Dr. Sauer served as participant, presenter, and guest faculty member at numerous seminars and symposiums, and had several of his articles and papers published. Dr. Sauer was known for his proficiency in Laparoscopic Surgery. He was a member of the New Britain YMCA; the Water Ski Club of Avon; served on the Advisory Committee of the MOMS Program; was a former member of the Hospital for Special Care Board of Directors and continued to be a gynecological consultant at that hospital; and served on a host of other committees at Grove Hill, New Britain General Hospital, and the University of Connecticut Medical Center. Professional Societies he belonged to included: the Hartford County and Connecticut Medical Association; the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists; as well as serving as former president of the Hartford County Obstetric and Gynecologic Society. Besides his wife Kathleen and his mother Gay, he is survived by 2 sons, Jeremy Sauer and his wife Jane of Catonsville, MD, and Keith Wilding, his wife Heather, and granddaughter Abigail of Bedford, NH; a brother, Joseph Sauer and his wife Debbie of Hudson, NY; 2 sisters, Linda Gubitosi and her husband Philip of Centreville, VA and Pat Roller and her husband Robert of Milwaukee, WI; many nieces and one nephew. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday 10 AM at St. Maurice Church, Wightman Rd., New Britain. Burial will be in Maple Cemetery, Berlin. Calling hours are Tuesday 3 to 8 PM at Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Square, New Britain. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to New Britain General Hospital, 100 Grand Street, New Britain, CT 06051.
