Richard J. Werhle Sr.

Richard J. Werhle, Sr., 92, of Kensington, CT, passed away on December 18, 2018 at Hartford Hospital. Richard was born in New York City on October 23, 1926 to James and Evelyn Werhle. A talented athlete, he was offered a basketball scholarship to St. Francis College. He joined the Navy in 1944 and served in radio operations during World War II aboard the destroyer USS Stickell deploying to the western Pacific. In 1950 he married Ruth Keary and they had 4 children together. He was employed by the National Health and Welfare Retirement Association for eight years then accepted a position with George A. Hormel Co where he worked for 32 years before retiring in 1987. He married Marjorie Jackson in 1986. Sharing a love of the ocean, they vacationed annually on Cape Cod. He enjoyed stamp and coin collecting and loved to fish. He was an avid fan of New York sports teams. He was actively involved in the Lions Club for many years and volunteered for the American Cancer Society for more than 20 years. Richard is survived by his wife, Marjorie Werhle (Jackson) of Kensington, CT, two daughters, Kristine (Bert) Fravezzi of Graceville, FL and Karen Werhle, of Wilmington, NC, two sons, Richard J. Werhle Jr of Old Saybrook, CT and Steven (Alena) Werhle of Colchester, CT, a step-son, Marl Jackson of Willington, CT, four grandchildren, Michael Pearson, Jennifer (David) Norman, Richard J (Jheraud James)Werhle III, and Brian (Katie)Werhle. He is also survived by 9 great grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Werhle (Keary), his parents, Evelyn Werhle (Steuerwald) and James Werhle, and his sister, Gladys Mitchell (Werhle). A Memorial Service will be held 11 AM January 12, 2018 at Carlson Funeral Home 45 Franklin Square, New Britain with Deacon Michael Puscas of St Andrews Church, Colchester, CT officiating. Family will receive visitors an hour prior to the service starting at 10 AM. Arrangements are by Carlson Funeral Home, New Britain, CT. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society 825 Brook Street I-91 Tech Center Rocky Hill, CT 06067 . The family of Richard Werhle wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the Hartford Hospital Neurological team, the 9th floor Neurological ICU Nursing staff, the Conklin Building 4th floor Palliative Care team, and the caregivers from Berlin VNA and Masonicare.
