Dr. Martin "Marty" Harwin

January 7, 1936 - February 15, 2022

Dr. S. Martin “Marty” Harwin, 86, of Boca Raton, husband of the late Dena (Horowitz) Harwin, passed away on 2/15/22 after a remarkable and courageous battle with multiple cancers. A graduate of Washington & Jefferson College in Pennsylvania and NYU Medical School, Marty worked hard to support himself throughout his academic career. He subsequently trained at Johns Hopkins University, and served as a beloved pediatrician for over 40 years. He practiced in New Britain, CT, at Grove Hill Medical Center, which he helped develop into a large, thriving multi-specialty medical practice until his retirement in 2006. He was an active member of the community where he practiced, and received such obvious personal reward each time he greeted a patient at the grocery store, his children’s schools, or in the neighborhood where he resided in Kensington. Dr. Harwin was an incredibly hard-working physician, available to his patients 6 days a week with very rare days away from the office. He made himself always available for emergencies and consultations, and has been lovingly remembered by scores of families. In his spare time, he was passionate about his family, his network of wonderful friends, his many and varied hobbies, such as long distance cycling, photography, hiking, art museums, and community theater. He was a board member, a donor, and a supporter of many organizations in central Connecticut. Marty was intellectually curious throughout his life, and loved learning. He loved current events and the news, and his Sunday New York Times. He was fascinated by his own personal cancer struggles, and never gave up his critical role as an active participant in his own treatment course. He was also truly fascinated by individual human stories, and loved talking with people from every walk of life. He knew the personal stories of every member of his healthcare team, who provided him exceptional care throughout his long struggles with multiple malignancies. Marty never lost his wit, his warmth, his unending capacity to support those he loved. He is survived by his loving children, Wendy Harwin,of Southington; Dr. Jonathan Harwin and his partner Elizabeth Ryan of Branford; as well as by his grandsons Nathaniel and Samuel, who always made him so proud. Marty is also survived by his beloved sister, Dr. Sherril Schuster and her husband Edwin of New Jersey; and by many nieces and nephews, step-grandchildren and extended family. He also leaves behind his loving partner of recent years, Beverly Albert, her children Lee, Vicki, Melinda and Jeff, and her cherished grandchildren Sherry, Marisa, Rick and Brad. Marty and Bev were so fortunate to share golden years of amazing travel, dancing, adventure, and beautiful friendships. Marty will be remembered and missed by so many. Private graveside services were held at the South Kensington Burying Ground. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to support Dr. Bruce Johnson’s research in Thoracic Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284. Carlson Funeral Home, New Britain assisted with arrangements. Please share a memory or note of sympathy at www.carlsonfuneralhome.com
