John G. Fosgrau, Jr.

John G. Fosgrau, Jr., 92, of Kensington, passed away November 26, 2023 with his beloved wife of 68 years, Catherine ‘Cathy’ (Casarola) by his side. John was born in New Britain on March 27, 1931 to the late John Fosgrau Sr. and Martha (Schwartz) Fosgrau. He was the last of a large, loving blended family whom he adored. He and his sister, Lillian, were the loving siblings every parent hopes for. John was a New Britain High School (Class of 1946) graduate and went on to receive an Associate’s Degree from Hillyer College (Now the University of Hartford). John was an Airman 2nd Class with the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean War. Afterwards, he was employed at Hamilton Standard as an Electronic Engineer in Research & Development for 22 years, retiring in 1992. New Britain was John and Cathy’s home for most of their life. But their second home at Oak Grove Beach in Niantic was where they spent all their summers. There, they made lifelong friends with their summer neighbors, and hosted numerous family events. While multiple generations have great memories of summer fun on the water with John and Cathy, the funniest stories pertain to remodeling the house. The endeavor took years, and provided his nieces and nephews a wealth of practical homeowner skills that are being passed on to the next generation. In addition to their summer house, John and Cathy also had a winter home on Hutchenson Island in Florida. They loved their Florida life and friends that they looked forward to reuniting with every year, for many decades. John and Cathy were world travelers. Highlights were their trips to Russia, China, and especially visiting relatives in Italy and Denmark. John loved to share stories of their travels, which always included making friends and many laughs. His sharp memory never failed him, which allowed all the family to feel like we lived his youth and his adventures with him. John never met a person that wasn’t his friend. He was endlessly kind, patient and always in good humor. He lived a life of gratitude and shared his joy and love with the world. He was loved by everyone. Besides his wife Cathy, he leaves a sister, Lillian Bero; a sister-in-law Rita Casarola, nieces and nephews including Kenneth Bero, Robert Bero, Susan Bero, Richard Bero, JoAnn Bostrom and previously deceased, Robert Bostrom. He was predeceased by five half-brothers and three half-sisters. Funeral services are Thursday (December 7, 2023) 11 AM at Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Square, New Britain. Burial with military honors will be at the CT State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown. Calling hours are Thursday morning from 10 to 11 AM at the funeral home.
