John "Jack" McDonald

John J. "Jack" McDonald, 86, of Southington, widower of Elizabeth Haggerty McDonald, passed away Monday January 23, 2012 at the Hospital of Central CT in New Britain. Born in New Milford, John lived in Bristol and Farmington before moving to the Southington/Plantsville area in 1998. He graduated from The Warren G. Harding High School in Bridgeport, Class of 1943, and served with the US Navy during WWII and the Korea Conflict. Jack was the owner of The Tabacco Pipe Shop which became McDonald's Variety Store in "The Exchange" in Farmington for 25 years, retiring in 1998. Prior to that, he was employed by Sears-Roebuck for 18 years. He was a member of St. Thomas Church in Southington. Jack was known as "Pop" to his family and was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and was much loved by all whom knew him. Jack's strong sense of family, integrity, positive attitude, service to others and sense of humor will be greatly missed. Surviving is a son Richard McDonald and his wife Annie of Bristol; four daughters, Diane Reder and her husband Stephen of Grantham, NH; Laura Bagnall and her husband Michael of Bristol; Marian McDonald of Southington; and Deborah McDonald and her partner Brian Portnick of Seattle, WA; four brothers, James McDonald of Stratford; Francis McDonald and his wife Maureen of Idaho; Walter McDonald and his wife Sherry of Rockland, CA; and William McDonald and his wife Susan of Stratford; a sister, Margaret Mason and her husband Edward of Alamo, CA; seven grandchildren, Michael and Brian McDonald; Abby DiBattista; and Katie Schoeler; Jeremy Oskandy; Danielle Oskandy and her partner Jude Louis; Marc Oskandy and his wife Jaclyn;; five great grandchildren; Riley, Chloe, Brayden, Kiara and Haley; many nieces and nephews. Besides his wife Elizabeth, Jack was predeceased by a grandson, Eric Oskandy as well as a brother and four sisters. Funeral services are private. There are no calling hours.
